Columbus photographer captures it all
that are full of emotion and depth. I especially love his coverage of local music
events--I swear you can feel the music coming right out of the images.

I’ve had the privilege of meeting up with him several times as we both cover
the local entertainment scene and on top of being an amazing photographer,
he is an overall nice guy too. He was gracious enough to grant me an
interview earlier this summer.

Deb: How long have you been a photographer?
David: I started shooting in 2002, but consider 2005 when I started doing it
professionally. That's when I became the Assistant Photo Editor for
The
Lantern
at OSU [The Ohio State University].

Deb: How did you get your start?
David: I started shooting sports and events in 2002 for Block-O at OSU. I was
doing their web site and event photos and then sports was kinda mixed in
there. In 2005 I got my first SLR [Single Lens Reflex]. While at
The Lantern I
started doing more theatre and concerts. In 2008 I started doing club and DJ
photography for one of the promoters at BoMA and then Sugar.

Deb: What do you specialize in?
David: At one time or another I've done a little bit of everything. I do mostly
things that move (sports, theatre, opera, concerts, events), but I have done a
few weddings and headshots and various other things. I always say if
someone asks. "have you ever shot ___" that I can always answer "yes."

Deb: What is your favorite kind of event to photograph?
David: I think I prefer the theatre and opera stuff over the rest, but I think it's the
balance in all of it that keeps me interested and sane. I love shooting sports
and concerts, but I think I get the most joy from seeing the finished product of
my theatre/opera/stage photography.

Deb: What was your favorite shoot of all?
David: That's kind of a loaded question, but probably my favorite to shoot is
Mr. Fahrenheit and the Loverboys. It's a Queen tribute band that  features
members from several local bands that come together two or three times a
year to play.

Deb: What kind of equipment do you use?
David: I use all Canon digital gear. I started with the 20D and then moved to
the 50D. I have some studio strobes that I use for my posed stuff (headshots,
band promos) but they don't see tons of action.

The impressive Mr. Heasley currently works with
UWeekly as Assistant Photo
Editor and Sports Photographer. He also works for PromoWest Productions
as the house photographer for Newport Music Hall, The LC, The Basement
and A&R Bar.

Did a concert really rock? Was
the show really stunning? The
fashion really amazing? How
do we know if there aren’t any
good photos to check out?  As
the technology becomes more
readily available, pictures are
pretty easy to come by.

But we all know just having a
cool camera doesn’t make a
great photographer. Truly
talented photographers aren’t
that easy to find. Let me
introduce you one.

David Heasley is a Columbus
photographer that impressed
me the very first time I was
exposed to his work. His
timing is impeccable. He
consistently delivers photos
