Oscar Nilsson–Drums

Being a long-time supporter of In Flames, I was very happy to hear about this project. Until now, I was unaware that
this even existed.
Raven Kings is the fourth album co-founded by In Flames guitarist Niclas Engelin (Marcus Sunesson
being the other). Imagine if you could focus all the melodic elements of In Flames and focus them into a fine-tuned
machine, and you get Engel. Right out of the gate I noticed the similarities between the two bands, but they’re very
different in their own right. In Flames uses screaming vocals as their main focal point to drive the song while Engel
relies mainly on the cleaner vocals of Mikael Sehlin. Both bands also use synthesizers to carry on the melodic death
core sound which is becoming a main export of Eastern Europe. The other similarity I noticed was the natural vibe I
picked up between their sound and long-time In Flames “rival” band, Soilwork. Overall, this is a very catchy and driving
album that definitely needs more recognition.
